Reading a failed lining

A refractory lining almost never fails for one reason. Thermal cycling cracks the hot face, slag or alkali vapour penetrates the crack, the infiltrated zone becomes denser and stiffer than the material behind it, and the next cycle shears that zone off. What comes out of the furnace is the end of that chain — and diagnosing only the last step is how plants buy the wrong material twice. Cross-sections, crack direction and where the wear is not will usually identify the mechanism by eye.

Practice, not just product

A large share of the problems we are asked about are operational: a heat-up curve that was compressed, a furnace soaking through the 400–600 °C band under reducing conditions, a ladle allowed to go cold between heats, an elbow that was always going to erode. These cost nothing to fix relative to a reline, and no grade change substitutes for them.

How we answer

We will point to a mechanism and a material system across the ranges we distribute, and we will say plainly where the problem is not a material problem at all. Where the answer needs the manufacturer, we escalate it rather than improvise — that is what the dealership is for.

What to send us

  • A photo of a cross-section of the failed material, hot face marked
  • Where in the vessel it failed — and where it did not
  • What changed: fuel, feed, scrap mix, throughput, cycling, or a repair by a different crew
  • Current lining specification and the campaign life achieved versus expected
