The lines
Low thermal mass is the whole argument
Fibre stores almost no heat compared with brick or castable, so a furnace lined with it heats up and cools down quickly and wastes far less energy on cyclic duty. On a batch furnace fired every day, that difference is the reason to choose it. On a continuously fired vessel it matters much less, and the mechanical and chemical weaknesses of fibre start to dominate the decision.
Choosing the form
Blanket is the general-purpose form, for back-up insulation, wrapping and lining behind an anchoring system. Modules are folded blanket pre-compressed into anchored blocks and are the usual answer for a full fibre hot-face lining, because they carry their own attachment and close their own joints as they relax. Paper and bulk are for gaskets, expansion joints, seals and packing. LRB mattress is a stitched form for larger back-up areas.
Ask about the classification before you specify
Fibre products differ in what they are made of, not only in temperature rating, and the classification of the fibre carries handling, PPE and disposal obligations that a plant EHS team will want on record. Ask for the manufacturer datasheet and the classification with the quotation rather than after delivery.
Where this is the wrong answer
Abrasion, direct slag or metal contact, high gas velocity, and any hot face that will be knocked, walked on or cleaned mechanically.
