The lines
Rigid where fibre is not
Calcium silicate is a formed, load-bearing insulation. It holds its thickness under the weight of the lining above it, which is what makes it a back-up layer rather than a hot-face one, and it can be cut and fitted to a dimension on site. Where a back-up layer has to carry load or hold a gap open, fibre compresses and calcium silicate does not.
Board, block and pipe section
Board is the general back-up form behind brick or castable. Block is the thicker section for the same duty. Pipe sections are pre-formed half-shells for lagging hot pipework and ducting, which is where most of the heat loss on a plant that is otherwise well lined actually goes.
Layering is where it pays
A dense hot face chosen for the duty, with an insulating layer behind it chosen for the heat it stops, almost always beats a single-material lining on shell temperature and on fuel. The hot face survives the process; the back-up layer keeps the heat in. Specifying both together is the difference between a lining that works and a lining that works cheaply.
Where this is the wrong answer
Hot-face duty, contact with slag or molten metal, and wet or condensing service unless the grade is confirmed for it.
