Low Cement
Conventional, low cement or insulating
Conventional castables carry the most calcium aluminate cement and the most water, which makes them tolerant of ordinary site practice and gives up hot strength in the intermediate range where the cement phases are at their weakest. Low-cement grades cut the cement and the water, which raises density and hot strength and makes the material much less forgiving about mixing water and dryout. Insulating castables are a different job entirely: low density, chosen for the heat they do not let through, and not for a hot face in contact with slag or abrasion.
The install is half the material
A castable arrives as a bag of powder and becomes a lining on your site, which means the placed properties are decided by water addition, mixing time, vibration or gunning practice, curing and the dryout schedule. Over-watering a low-cement castable to make it place more easily can undo the reason it was specified. This is the family where a datasheet number and an installed number diverge most.
Dryout is not optional
Cement-bonded monolithics hold chemically combined water that has to leave through a permeability the material barely has. Heat it faster than the schedule and the steam pressure spalls the hot face — sometimes explosively on a thick low-cement section. The heat-up curve belongs in the specification alongside the grade.
Where this is the wrong answer
Long regular runs where brick would install faster and hold dimension better, and any shutdown too short to include a proper dryout.
