What the grades mean

Alumina percentage is the number that separates one high alumina brick from the next, and it tracks refractoriness and resistance to acidic slag rather than temperature alone. Magnesite is a different chemistry, not a higher grade: it is basic, and it is specified where iron-oxide scale or basic slag would dissolve an alumina brick. Insulating brick is chosen by density and hot-face limit because its job is to not conduct heat, and it is not a hot-face material behind abrasion or slag.

Where brick beats a monolithic

Brick holds a dimension. In a rotary kiln, a reheating furnace hearth, a ladle or a coke oven, a fired shape arrives at a known size with known properties and does not depend on site mixing, placement or dryout to reach them. That predictability is the argument for brick anywhere the geometry is regular and the campaign is long. Where the geometry is not regular, a castable or a plastic refractory usually wins on installed cost.

What to send with an enquiry

Vessel and zone, operating temperature, atmosphere, what contacts the lining (slag, metal, scale, alkali, alternative-fuel volatiles), thermal cycling, and the existing lining with its failure history. A grade recommended without the failure history is a guess with a datasheet attached.

Where this is the wrong answer

Complex profiles, burner throats, tapered sections and anything you would otherwise have to cut brick to fit. Cast or ram those.
