The lines
Rammed, not cast
A plastic refractory arrives wet and stiff and is beaten into place with a pneumatic rammer, which means it is placed at a much lower water content than a castable and develops its bond mechanically rather than through a cement hydration reaction. That is why it goes back into service faster and why it tolerates being installed against an existing hot lining in a way a cement-bonded material does not.
Where it is the right answer
Burner blocks, burner throats, tap-holes, roof and arch sections, and any repair in a complex geometry where formwork is impractical and the shutdown is short. Also the standard answer for a localised repair to a monolithic lining that is otherwise serviceable.
Aluminium contact is a separate specification
Molten aluminium wets and penetrates ordinary alumina refractories and then grows corundum inside them, which is a chemical and volumetric failure rather than a thermal one. Non-wetting grades exist for exactly this duty and are specified by contact with the metal, not by furnace temperature.
Where this is the wrong answer
Large plain areas, where casting or gunning covers ground far faster, and any duty where the ramming quality cannot be supervised.
